Homeschooling…Let’s Do This!

Should we or shouldn’t we? My husband and I went back and forth on deciding whether or not to homeschool our kiddos. We made the decision to give it a try! Our little man is four years old, so now is the perfect time to go for it. He has been in a preschool program for a couple of years, and we’ve also worked on a lot of things with him at home…letter names and sounds, numbers, colors, shapes, patterns, writing his name, cutting, tracing, and even a little bit of adding.

The idea of homeschooling seems like a big undertaking. It is. I definitely need a plan of action and a schedule. Here are some helpful tips that I came up with:

Gather Materials

  • Books, books, books! – Use your own, swap with friends, or hit up your local library!
  • You can gather a ton of ideas from Pinterest and other blogs.
  • Get connected with other friends who homeschool or teach.
  • Don’t know how to make a certain craft? Stumped on crafts or themes to follow? Google is your best friend! 🙂
  • Hopefully, the weather will be cooling off soon. Hit up some yard sales in your area. You’ll be surprised at some of the gems you will find at great prices.
  • Also hit up your local thrift store. The one in our area that I like to frequent has kids’ paperback books for 50 cents and hardback books for $1. You can’t beat that!

  • Evaluate your kiddo on letter recognition, letter sounds, number recognition, rote counting, etc.
  • Having this info helps you with the areas where your child needs focus.

  • Establish an area that is learning focused.
  • Make learning areas fun!
  • Reduce the amount of distractions during learning time.
  • Create a reading area that is quiet and comfortable.

  • When possible (and necessary) include younger siblings with crafts and reading.
  • Make activities as interactive and hands-on as possible.
  • Have games and activities that can be done independently as well as those that require instruction.

So, there ya go! I am SO excited about getting started with homeschooling my little man! The teacher in me has a ton of ideas rolling around in my head. 🙂 I’ll share any ideas, tips, and hiccups I have along the way.

What are your ideas? Got a plan of action for this school year? I’d love to hear them!

Pom Pom Rug

In an effort to reduce and organize my yarn stash, I’ve been trying to think of ways to use my leftovers instead of throwing them out. I’m currently working on a yo-yo throw, but I’m only using a certain type of yarn for that project. What do I do with all the rest? Then I came across the pom pom rug. They are so stinkin’ cute! Here are some I found in my searches…

And here is my version of the pom pom rug. It seemed like it was going to be somewhat bigger until I started stitching it together. I strung the poms onto long strands of yarn, then I formed them into a circle and stitched them together.

I wrapped the yarn around my fingers 40-60 times depending on the thickness of the yarn.

The completed rug...for now.

I can't wait to add more to it and make it larger!

This project was completed over the course of three days. You definitely need time to sit and work on it. I thought my yarn stash would go farther than this, but it makes for a nice reading cushion. However, I do plan to add more and make it a larger rug. It’s so squishy and soft!

Handmade Blessings

So this is my first link up since starting my new blog! Yay! Among the things I love are handmade items. If you don’t love handmade, then I’m not sure we can be friends…seriously. 😉 A sweet gift from a friend sparked the idea for this post, and I just had to share some of my favorite handmade gifts. Ok, so two of them are from my son!

Here’s a Mother’s Day gift from last year…totally made me tear up!

And here’s the one from this year. Super cute!

This next handmade gift takes a little explaining…On April 2nd of last year, we found out we were expecting our second baby. On April 9th, we lost that baby. I was completely heartbroken, and I never knew that I would grieve so hard for a little life that I had carried for a short amount of time. I know that the Lord knows best and understands beyond what we can comprehend here on this earth. I would lie in bed some nights asking God to hold me and thinking about my little one in His arms. Every time I closed my eyes, I could see this beautiful little girl smiling back at me. I knew in my heart, that we had lost a baby girl. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that my husband and I gave her the name Sara Lillian, and I shared that with a few close friends. One of those dear, sweet friends over at Life, Crafts & Whatever was there, and she made one of the most precious handmade gifts I’ve ever received….

Of course I’ll always think of my precious girl, but it’s so sweet to have this little reminder sitting on our desk with family photos. I tear up every time I see it. So, for those of you who give handmade gifts…keep on giving! They’re more of a blessing than you know!

Crime, Punishment & Castles

Since we moved into our new home back in November, we’ve had grand ideas for decorating each room. However, I was eight months pregnant at the time, and my husband wouldn’t let me anywhere near a paint can. We knew that we could only afford to complete one project at a time, but we had no idea where to start first. That was until our three year old decided to help us out! Within one month of our daughter’s birth in January, our son had decorated our new home with SEVEN murals!!! Geez! Some form of regression? Acting out? Jealousy? Terrible threes? Who knows! I wanted to freak out at first, but I had to take a step back and remind myself that I would one day miss those crayon marks on the walls. So I decided to take pictures for his scrapbook then put him to work…..

The pictures I’m not showing are the ones where he finally broke down into tears. Sad, I know, but he had to get the point that coloring all over the walls is not acceptable. So it looks like we’ll be starting our decorating in his room! We have grand ideas of a castle themed room, and I can’t wait. The paint is bought…has been for about three months now…We’ll get to it eventually. In the mean time, I’m having a blast gathering ideas. 🙂

How cute is this?!

Inspiration for curtains, maybe?

Definitely have to do this!

I can’t wait to get started!
